Playful Communication in a Serious World

Playfulness is a characteristic or a quality associated with a light-hearted and joyful attitude. Playfulness is often characterised by a willingness to explore, experiment, and enjoy the present moment without the constraints of strict rules or formalities.
In communication, playfulness refers to the intentional use of light-hearted, creative, and spontaneous elements to enhance interaction and create a positive atmosphere. It involves incorporating humour, imaginative language, and a general sense of enjoyment into conversations to make them more engaging and pleasurable.
Play and work are often viewed as opposite concepts in everyday language. Brian Sutton-Smith, one of the most influential play theorists of the 20th century, once said that the opposite of play is not work, but depression. In his book The Ambiguity of Play (1997), he suggests that the real opposite of play is depression, because play embodies vitality, imagination, and engagement with life, whereas depression is marked by withdrawal, lack of energy, and loss of interest.
Work and play share some important properties, especially when it comes to creativity. Both basic human activities are order-making and control-seeking and have an active, transformative impact on the environment. The key difference lies in their purposes.
While work is instrumental and has an external purpose, play is usually autotelic (it is done for its own sake). However, play can also have an external purpose, though this purpose is flexible. Even though the workplace is a "place for work", it is also a place where play and work often collide. Indeed, Proyer has found that adults see functions of playfulness in a wide variety of daily life situations, including playfulness at work with and without their colleagues.
There are multiple benefits that studies have linked with a playful mindset: a playful attitude can alleviate anxieties, help to cope with depression or promote the formation of new friendships.
Even though being playful is associated with children in particular, there is a school of thought that points out how beneficial and fun play can be at work. In her review of research into this area, Jacqueline Miller reported that humour at work can relieve stress, improve interpersonal skills, and foster creativity and rapid learning, among other things.

Our adult minds are chore-filled stopwatches—ticking away as we rush to the finish line and collapse at the end of the day, only to realise that we have forgotten to do something. Young children, in contrast, do not keep a running tally of what needs to get done. They exhibit no urgency. Children are spontaneous and live in the moment. And play is a huge part of living in the moment. Toddlers meander from room to room with no apparent goal but to have fun; they stop to pick up a toy or book here and there; they plop down to build something with blocks or to bang on their play piano; they push cars and trucks along the floor, belting out “vroom, vroom”; and even when they are expected to do something else, they find a way to play — as when a toddler finger paints with her food.
This is a wonderful way to be. This is not a suggestion to abandon all adult responsibilities and adopt childlike traits. However, there is enough evidence to steer us in the direction of more fun and light-heartedness in our work and personal lives alike. After all, prolonged work stress and pressure are associated with a negative impact on thinking abilities, memory and attention.
The benefits of playfulness for communication are certainly worth mentioning.
Enhanced Creativity and Innovation: Playfulness catalyses creative thinking, leading to innovative solutions and ideas. It encourages individuals to step outside their comfort zones and explore new possibilities.
Stress Reduction and Tension Dissipation: Playful communication acts as a stress reliever, particularly in high-pressure situations. A touch of humour or a playful approach can ease tension, making challenging discussions more manageable.
Improved Active Listening: When communication is enjoyable, active participation and attentive listening naturally follow. Playfulness captivates attention, ensuring that individuals are fully engaged in the conversation at hand.
Positive Impact on Relationships: Playfulness strengthens interpersonal relationships by fostering a shared sense of joy and camaraderie. It breaks down communication barriers, leading to more authentic and fulfilling connections.
7 ideas on how to incorporate playfulness into communication if you are a team leader.
Know your audience - understand the context and preferences of your audience. While playfulness can enhance communication, it's essential to gauge the appropriateness of your approach in different situations.
Use playful language/humour - Incorporate playful language, metaphors, and anecdotes into your communication. This not only adds a creative flair but also makes your message more memorable and relatable.
Introduce interactive elements such as team-building activities, brainstorming games, or open-ended discussions. These activities not only break the monotony but also encourage collaboration and collective problem-solving.
Embrace spontaneity as a flexible mindset, allowing for unexpected turns in the conversation and encouraging a more natural and free-flowing interaction.
Encourage open dialogue - encourage team members to express their opinions and ideas in a supportive environment. Create a platform for sharing personal experiences, stories and interests.
Incorporate gamification - gamification in the workplace is the use of game techniques in a non-game context. Create internal competitions to engage employees in a healthy “race” and incorporate scores, levels, and prizes as extra motivation. Based on a recent TalentLMS survey on gamification, 83% of those who receive gamified training feel motivated, while 61% of those who receive non-gamified training feel bored and unproductive.
Lead by example - encourage other leaders and team members to embrace playfulness. Demonstrate a playful and positive attitude in your communication.
Consider this as an invitation to sprinkle a bit of playfulness into your daily discourse. May your words carry the spirit of laughter, your ideas dance with creativity, and your interactions become a stage for shared moments of delight. In doing so, we contribute not only to a more enjoyable and vibrant communication environment but also to a world where connection triumphs over isolation and where the serious and the playful coexist in beautiful harmony.
